What's Up at the Library?

library_xpress Are you preparing for the ACT or SAT tests? Maybe you want to change careers and need to take tests to get your real estate license or become a paramedic. Or maybe you just want to brush up on math skills. You can do all of this and much more with the Learning Express Library, a new database on our web site under Research. It has practice exams ranging from 4th-grade achievement tests to AP exams and college entrance tests. There are licensing and certification practice tests for 13 different careers, GED preparation and the citizenship test. Tests offer instant scoring so you know immediately how well you did. In addition, there are courses to help you review and learn skills related to the tests. The Learning Express Library is available to A. H. cardholders. Use from home or in the Library.

Three watercolor paintings of Chicago scenes, donated to the Library in memory of former volunteer and Friends of the Library president George Krueger, were dedicated at a recent event. The paintings by artist Sally Perfect Wallman were selected by the Friends of the Library Art Committee and are hanging above the foreign film DVDs on the first floor. computer classes Free computer and Internet classes begin in September. Pick up a brochure at the Welcome Desk, the Answer Center or the Reception Desk on the second level or check the program calendar online to get complete information about the new series of classes. You can register online or at the Reception Desk, 847-392-0100.

Did you know that the Library subscribes to 990 different magazines, newspapers and newsletters?  And that you can check out back issues? Many of the current issues are in the News Stand near the café on the first floor, and back issues are in the Shackley Room on the second floor. If you see a current magazine you like, you can reserve it, and we'll let you know when it is available. It can be checked out for one week and renewed twice. supplementsConsumer Lab is a new database that you can use to evaluate vitamins, herbs, and supplements that are not regularly tested by government organizations. In addition to product reviews, Consumer Lab contains the Natural and Alternative Treatments encyclopedia as well as announcements about product recalls and warnings. Use Consumer Lab to learn about everything from nutrition bars to Omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins, memory enhancers, and more. Consumer Lab is available on our Research page; either click on View Databases by Subject and select Health and Medical, or click on View Databases A-Z.

the-twitter-book Want to know how to make the best use of Twitter? How about improving your digital photography or learning how to use Photoshop? You can do this and so much more online using our new Safari Select database. It contains over 400 technical books that you can read entirely online. There's no downloading or checking them out. More than one person can read them at a time, so they are always available. You can find Safari Select listed with our other databases under Research. You can use it from home or in the Library. If using from home, you will need an A.H. library card, or you can come into the Library and register for remote access at the Welcome Desk.

mousetrap-machine-show This was the scene at a recent program, Mousetrap Machine Show, as kids learned about levers and fulcrums and other science and math concepts using giant balloons. It is just one of many programs that kids are enjoying at the Library this summer. Come  join the fun. Be sure to check out the exciting programs for kids this month.
