Anyone who lives in the area has certainly noticed the smell of skunks this summer and fall. According to a recent Chicago Tribune article, the presence of skunks has increased this year due to the warm winter and dry summer. Although you don't want to get too close, you and your child may have even seen some skunks in your backyard. The library has books that can help you in educating your child about the critters who live in our backyards. Here's a LIST with books about skunks.

What a huge topic this is for a little blog! We see so many families come through our doors. Around this time everyone is helping their kids prepare for school. New clothes, new bedtime, new rules about homework, etc. It's all a part of the preparation - for back to school. I wanted to see what we had on our shelves that would help with advice and thoughts about this momentous time of year. I created a short list of titles but we have many, many more. From academics, to bullying to different learning styles. We have it all. Sometimes just browsing a book will help you sort through your own thoughts about a topic. So take a look at the list, If you have questions please come in and ask us. We can direct you to the answers. Have a great school year!.

Library staff are having fun watching our smallest customers' eyes light up when they see the trains in Kids' World. Bring your children in to sign up for the summer reading program and enjoy their reactions. Be sure to enter the photo contest by taking your child's picture with the Choo Choo Choose Reading train. Ask for details at the summer reading desk. Take home some train books to bring the theme home with you. Hope to see you soon!

Have you ever read a novel that's written like a poem? Sometimes the lines rhyme and sometimes they don't.. Some of my favorite books are written this way. The author seems to use less words but still tells a great story. I made a list in case you'd like to try some. Let me know if you do and what you think!

You'll soon be able to read Harry Potter books on your e-reader! Watch for these to be available at the end of April. While you're waiting, you can browse eBooks and eAudiobooks from the library's website to find something good to read or listen to. Just point the cursor to Borrow and click on eBooks and eAudiobooks. You may like reading the title that just won the Caudill Award - Powerless by Matthew Cody - or listening to Vespers Rising by Rick Riordan.

This year marks the 200th birthday of one of the most famous writers of all times - Charles Dickens. Dickens was an ordinary person who wrote extraordinary stories. No one tells a ghost story quite like Dickens. Even though he lived in the 1800s we still love his books today. Many of his novels are for adults but some appeal to kids too. In Kids' World we have shortened versions of his works. We also have fascinating biographies of his life. Some of the books we have feature him as a character in the story. Here's a list of books written by him and about him - but there are more. Have you ever thought about becoming a writer yourself? You may want to come to our workshops for kids held at the library. They're called Kids' Ink. Please check the newsletter for future dates.
