This is an exciting time in Kids' World! Staff are getting ready for summer reading. Please watch the website for the summer reading lists. We will also have these available in hard copy beginning June 4th. This year we will offer summer lists of recommended books for children, 19 months through 8th grade. In our busy lives sometimes it's easy to forget about the fun, enriching things. Enewsletters are a great way to remind yourself about upcoming library programs for children or even new chapter books that have just been purchased by the library. If you have a young child you may be interested in literacy tips and new picture books. The library has over 30 eNewsletters for all ages and interests that appear in your e-mail as a gentle reminder to sign your child up for that program or grab a good book for your child - or yourself. Can’t seem to pull your kids away from all those screens? Are they glued to the TV, a laptop, their favorite video game? Try turning the gadgets off and getting your kids tuned-in to the outdoors instead. Use A Stick is an Excellent Thing: Poems Celebrating Outdoor Play for inspiration. This book of poetry celebrates classic childhood activities such as playing in the sprinkler, riding a skateboard, and running races across the yard. Remember when?

As a kid, I often heard these words from my mom. Now that spring has arrived, we have the perfect books filled with ideas for your children when these words cross your lips. Whether its an old standard or a new-to-you activity, these books explain the games in a simple and straightforward ,manner. So, get the iced tea and lemonade ready. It's time for an outdoor get-together.

Hi Parents,
Your youngster will soon be able to sign-up for this popular summer program. Just a reminder that students must be completing grades 6, 7, or 8 to participate as a Junior Library Volunteer this summer. This is a dynamic program where the volunteers help to run the summer reading program and assist the library behind-the-scenes. Pick up an application at the Kids' World Desk or download it at www.ahml.info/kids.
Registration deadline is May 14 at 10PM. All completed applications must be returned to Kids' World.

I was in line a few weeks ago and observed a mother keeping her young daughter entertained as they waited by singing Jim Gill songs. The little girl danced along, doing all the actions the lyrics called for. It reminded me to check out his latest CD, Jim Gill Presents Music Play for Folks of All Stripes. My favorite songs on the CD are “It Takes Some Friends” and “Bananas.” Chicago Parent gave the CD a rave review but WXRT perhaps put it best when they said simply, “No one does it better than Jim Gill.”

In our hectic day to day lives, help is always appreciated, especially when it comes to our childrens' homework. On Thursday, March 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m. come to the library for a special program demonstrating how the library can assist your child with their homework using our online resources.This will be a hands-on experience with useful handouts. Years ago someone told me that one of the greatest things parents can do for their children is to raise them to be polite. He reasoned that in so doing, adults (other than their parents) would want to help them along in life. I thought that was quite insightful. "Please" and "Thank you" go a long way to endearing a youngster to other adult "helpers." Toward that end, here is a list of materials you might find useful. Good luck, Mom and Dad!
