What was life really like for the servants who worked below stairs in the era of Downton Abbey? Come and learn about the people who toiled around the clock to ensure the smooth running of these glamorous households. Leslie Goddard portrays Margaret Powell, a British domestic servant who worked in English homes in the 1920s. Based on Powell’s best-selling memoir Below Stairs, this program gives a lively look at the work it took to run a wealthy household in this era. Powell’s 1968 book was an inspiration for Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey.

Book Discussion - The Graysons: A Story of Illinois

Originally published in 1887, The Graysons: A Story of Illinois by Edward Eggleston is a tall tale of a murder trial has the defendant being counseled by a young Abraham Lincoln. When Tom Grayson, gets charged with the murder of no-good townsmen, Gary Lockwood, his mother hires Abraham Lincoln to defend him. Everything seems against Grayson but Abraham Lincoln is able to see the problems in the witnesses’ accounts in this legal story. Bringing Your Story to Life

Come learn how the library can help you tell your story. Local author Paula Burzawa will talk about her experiences using library resources to write her novels. Then staff member Alex Hoffman will demo the tools available in the Studio and show how to use them to capture your family history or personal story. An optional open house of the Studio will follow.

Building Suspense in Fiction Writing with Author Libby Fischer Hellmann

Award-winning Chicago crime thriller author Libby Fischer Hellman will share her insights into the different elements of crime writing fiction, with a focus on how to build suspense into your work. Attendees will participate in a variety of exercises and discussion. Libby will also talk about her own writing career, why she chose crime fiction, as well as a recap of her suspense, thrillers and mysteries. A Q&A session will close the program.

Caddy Stacks Event Scores a Hole in One

For one night, it was like the Masters at the Library, or at least the masters of mini golf. The Library was turned into a very unique mini golf course featuring our extensive collection. The Caddy Stacks mini golf event was a fundraiser for a new aquarium for Kids' World and a chance to see the Library in a whole new way. From the big blue monster that welcomed all to Kids' World to the stunning floral display from Sylvia's Flowers, the entire building was transformed. We'd like to thank our participants and sponsors for their support of this event.
