Sports Authorities: Horse Racing

And they're off... A panel of jockeys, horse trainers and sportswriters will get us ready for the horse racing season, both locally at Arlington Park and nationally. Get a trackside perspective from speakers Jim O'Donnell, currently affiliated with the Chicago Tribune and formerly with the Sun-Times and Daily Herald; championship horse trainer Larry Rivelli; Chicago senior jockey agent Tom Morgan, and Brandon Meier, second-generation jockey. Sunday Musicale: The Gambling Husband

The Gambling Husband is the most performed opera of the entire 18th century. The work dates from 1715 and was written by Giuseppe Orlandini, a composer who would otherwise be forgotten were it not for the extraordinary popularity of this opera. It was originally performed in Italian but has been translated into English by the performers Peter and Kathleen van de Graaff.

If you want to get a start on your taxes, the Library's self-serve Tax Station, located in the nonfiction area near the Answer Center, currently offers federal tax forms and publications. The Illinois tax forms and publications will arrive before the end of January. Call the Answer Center, 847-506-2633, to find out if specific forms are available. The Art of Marc Chagall: Paintings, Mosaics and Stained Glass

This past November the famous "Chagall Windows" returned to the galleries of The Art Institute of Chicago after a five-year absence. Art historian and professor Dr. Michelle Paluch-Mishur discusses Chagall's distinctive style and his major themes. Going beyond the "Windows," Dr. Paluch-Mishur presents many important paintings and projects that Chagall completed, including another Chicago favorite -- the Four Seasons Mosaic.

The Art Train Stops Here

flightpatternsbyDennisSmith This Saturday, April 24, Art Train Illinois comes to Arlington Heights, and one of its stops is at the Library. Come by and view the Library's artwork from 11 a.m-3 p.m. Be sure to pick up an Art in the Library brochure at the Dunton Avenue entrance to guide you on your tour. Brochures are also available at the Reception Desk on the second floor. And while you're here, stop in at the Friends of the Library's Super Spring Used Book sale in the Hendrickson and Lindsey Rooms. Sale hours are 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on Saturday. This new event is hosted by the Arts Commission of Arlington Heights.
