The author, a firefighter in Elgin, Illinois and the son of one of the volunteer Palatine firefighters that responded to the February 23, 1973 early-morning fire at the Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in downtown Palatine, presents his eyewitness account of the fire, accompanied by photographs taken at the scene, including details of the Palatine firefighters' firefighting efforts and of the days following, along with brief biographical sketches of each Palatine firefighter that fought the 1973 fire and a collection of photographs that feature the 1970s Palatine Fire Department, staff and family members
