Main Library

The main library is at 500 N. Dunton Ave. Entrances are at the underground parking level (with elevator access) and above ground on Dunton Ave. (wheelchair ramp access and elevator inside).  

Makerplace

The library’s Makerplace is at 112 N. Belmont Ave. The entrance is on Belmont Ave. (wheelchair ramp access and elevator inside). 

Senior Center Reading Room

The Senior Center at 1801 W. Central Road is home to the library’s Reading Room branch, with fully accessible building access. All entrances are equipped with automatic door openers.

Parking

Main Library

Free library parking is available at the outside and underground parking lots at 500 N. Dunton Ave. at the corner of Dunton and Euclid. In case of some large events, if the library parking lots fill, additional paid or free parking may be available at the Vail Avenue Commuter Lot at the corner of West St. James Street and Vail Avenue, Fremont Street and Vail Avenue. Street parking is available on the streets surrounding the library.  

Makerplace

Limited parking is available in a lot behind the Makerplace. Additional parking is available across the street in the Recreation Park parking lot next to the tennis courts. Street parking is available on Miner Street, Pine Street, Wing Street and Belmont Avenue. Free garage parking is available 0.2 miles away in the Village of Arlington Heights North Garage.

Senior Center Reading Room

The library’s Reading Room branch at the Senior Center has an outdoor parking lot at 1801 W. Central Road.  

Accessible Parking

Most of the main library’s accessible parking spots are in the underground parking lot at 500 N. Dunton Ave. Some are available in the outdoor lot.  

Some outdoor accessible parking spots are available at the Makerplace at 112 N. Belmont Ave.  

The Senior Center has ample outdoor accessible spots in its parking lot.

Main Library

Accessible by both Metra train and Pace Bus. To learn more about bus and train schedules and accessibility information, visit the Metra page and Pace page. The library is a 0.3 mile walk from the Metra station. The library is located within a Pace On Demand zone. Visit the Pace website to reserve the shared-ride service. 

Makerplace

The Makerplace is a 0.3 mile walk from the Metra station. The Makerplace is located within a Pace On-Demand zone. Visit the Pace website to reserve the shared-ride service. 

Senior Center Reading Room

The Senior Center is a 2.1 mile walk from the Arlington Park Metra station. The Senior Center is located within a Pace On-Demand zone. Visit the Pace website to reserve the shared-ride service.

Biking to the Main Library

Located on a Village bicycle route. View Arlington Heights bicycle routes. Bike racks are available near the library entrance at Dunton Ave. and the underground parking lot. 

Biking to the Makerplace

Biking to the Senior Center

Drive Up, Drop Off, Pick Up

Drive-up Window

Reserved items may be picked up at the drive-up window in the library's underground parking lot. For your safety, we can only serve motorized vehicles at the drive-up window.

Drop-off Boxes

A 24/7 drive-up book and media drop-off box is located in the northeast corner of the library’s underground parking lot and outside the Dunton Ave. entrance. A drive-up book and media drop-off box is also available outside the Senior Center at 1801 W. Central Road and at the following Arlington Heights Park District Facilities: Camelot Park, Frontier Park and Heritage Park Community Centers.

Pickup Lockers

Reserved items may be picked up at the pickup lockers located in the library’s underground parking lot or in the community at Camelot Park and Heritage Park. Accessible parking spaces are available near the lockers.

Restrooms & Wellness

Restroom Locations

Restrooms are available at the main library in the following areas: 

First Floor: Gendered restrooms with wheelchair-accessible stalls and changing tables are next to the Checkout Desk. Gendered restrooms for children and their caretakers, each with changing tables and wheelchair-accessible stalls, are located in Kids’ World. 

Second Floor: Gendered restrooms are located next to the Info Desk on the second floor.  

Free sanitary products are available to visitors in all female and all-gendered restrooms. 

Restrooms with sink step stools are available in all gendered restrooms.  

Restrooms with self-flush features are available throughout the library, except for in Kids’ World.  

All-Gender Restrooms

An all-ages, all-gender restroom is in Kid’s World on the library’s first floor and near the service desk on the second floor. 

Nursing Room

The library welcomes nursing mothers, who may nurse their babies in any public space in the library. The main library also has a Wellness Room available to nursing mothers within Kids’ World on the library’s first floor. Ask at the Kids’ World Desk for entrance. This space has a closeable, lockable door. 

Wellness Room

The library's designated quiet room is in Kids' World on the first floor. This Wellness Room is available for guests who require a quieter space when visiting the library. Please ask at the Kids’ World Desk for entrance. This space has a closeable, lockable door. 

Changing Tables

The library offers two types of changing tables: a child-sized changing table in every public restroom and in the Kids' World Wellness Room, and a powered, height-adjustable universal changing table for children and adults located in the second floor all-gender restroom.

Accessibility: Elevators

The elevators are next to the stairs in the center of the library. Elevators allow customers to access all floors of the library. Entrances in the underground parking level and above ground on Dunton Ave. include ground level elevator access.  

Accessibility: Wheelchairs & Walkers

A limited number of motorized scooters and rollator walkers are available on the main floor at the Dunton Ave. entrance and the lower-level underground parking entrance. Elevators and ramps serve all public areas within the building. Complimentary use of a walker or wheelchair is available free of charge to guests as availability permits. Accessibility: Service Animals

In accordance with policy 7.0025 Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance, service animals are welcome in the library, Makerplace and Senior Center. Service animals are permitted in any area where members of the public are permitted to go.

Food & Vending

Water Fountains & Filling Stations

Water fountains are on the library's first and second floors located near the restrooms and outside of the Hendrickson Room.  

Food, Vending & Cafe Seating

Food and beverage vending machines and cafe seating are available on the library’s first floor near the library’s New & Popular section.  

A snack cafe area for kids and families is inside the entrance to Kids’ World on the library’s first floor. Other food is not available for purchase inside Kids’ World.  

A small number of cafe tables and some vending machines are also available near the Info Desk on the library’s second floor.  

Other Useful Information

Translation & ESL Services

The ESL & Literary Services Office is located on the first floor of the library. Staff are in the office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The ESL & Literacy office is closed on Sundays.

A phone-to-talk translation service is available in the library. More information about the library’s ESL and Literacy Services.

If you need help finding resources, learning how to use digital resources from home, or information about virtual or in-person tutoring, please email esl@ahml.info. We can set up an appointment to meet in person or via Zoom, schedule a phone call or provide a written explanation. We would love to hear from you!

Please note that one-on-one tutoring sessions are limited to Arlington Heights cardholders. Additionally, we are experiencing a high demand for tutoring services, and there may be a waitlist to be paired with a tutor. If you have any questions, please contact us. 

Scout Visits

Arlington Heights-based Scout groups can request a visit with the library to help earn their badges. Scout leaders can review our list of activities offered for Scout groups and submit a request to connect with our staff to schedule a visit.

Self-Check Machines

Self-check stations are available for easy checkout throughout the first floor of the library near the Checkout Desk, in the Music & Movies section and in Kids’ World. Items can also be checked out using the self-check feature when logged into your library account on a mobile device. 

Lost & Found

If you have lost an item at the library, please ask a staff member for help. Lost and Found items can be picked up at the Checkout Desk on the main floor.

Book Carts & Baskets

Book carts and baskets to carry your materials are available for use in the library and can be checked out.
