When Dr. Daniel Kauffman asks the headstrong Fannie Hochstetler to assist him in a clinic he has set up in the Amish community, she reluctantly agrees. Tired of her mother's attempts to plan her life, Fannie sees the offer as an opportunity to become a midwife, even if that means working with a man asinsufferable as Daniel. Daniel isn't thrilled to be working with Fannie either, but he needs her help in order to split his time between the hospital and the community. And she's a natural with the patients.
