NOTES

The yellow dinghy café is a Young Adult novel that follows three girls over the course of a year. Cybelle, who is very wealthy, has a gap year in the U.K. and Vietnam, Jasmine studies at a regional university, having earned a full scholarship and Michaela works at a local café. Cybelle is dealing with the ripple-effect of a stalker's harassment and her parents' impending divorce. Battling an anxiety disorder, she finds solace in writing poetry and getting to know George, an elderly neighbour of her host family in Faversham, Kent. Jack, the youngest son, also provides friendship but has bouts of aloofness which don't make sense. With a pattern of being duped and used by men, Cybelle wonders whether she has any radar at all. Jasmine, who is living on-campus is disappointed when things don't work out the way she planned. Beatrice, her flatmate, bullies her and initially the other girls go along with it. It is only Patrick, the lone male of the group who she feels she can trust. Surviving a dust storm and a car accident, Jasmine falls into Patrick's arms, but is horrified when she discovers he isn't what he seems. Furthermore, in the light of the secret she is harbouring, which threatens to alter the course of her life, Jasmine decides to live in the moment, but at what cost? Michaela meets Charlotte, a little girl who creates a scene during the morning rush. She is very similar to Michaela but has a complicated and troubled past. Michaela leaves her job and ends up working at The Yellow Dinghy Café where she gets to know Peter, the owner-operator. Things are going swimmingly but over time, Peter shows signs of strain and stress. What is troubling him and in addition, what is his connection to Charlotte's mother, who is using an assumed name?
