This is a fictional story set in the ancient Viking settlement of Greenland. A stranger is shipwrecked at the mouth of a fiord. He is rescued and taken in by a family of Viking farmers. Over the next year he becomes entwined in various relationships within the community, especially with the wife of a famous carver. The carver is believed to keep the settlement safe through his ability to control the demons of the unknown earth through his art.
