Sheriff Pat Garrett (Thomas Mitchell) welcomes his old friend Doc Holliday (Walter Huston) to Lincoln, New Mexico. Doc is pursuing a horse stolen by Billy the Kid (Jack Buetel), but unexpectedly, Doc and Billy become friends. When Billy is shot, Rio McDonald (Jane Russell) nurses him back to health, and the two fall in love creating tension between Doc and Billy while Garrett is in pursuit of the outlaws. The first American film that defied the Hollywood Production Code Administration (the Hays Code). The film debuts of both Jane Russell and later Oscar winner, Ben Johnson
