NOTES

Lady Maggie enters society for the first time and encounters a Duke who fixates on her sister and her. When the Duke causes trouble for Lady Maggie, she asks her father to intervene, and he informs the Duke that Maggie is not interested in being courted by him, so he best set his sites on her sister. A series of events make Lady Maggie concerned for her reputation and future, but when Captain Devine comes to her aid, she is smitten. To avoid future problems, Lady Maggie decides to avoid the social events that the Duke will attend, and with the help of the Captain and two friends, they accept invitations to less prestigious occasions. After the first event's success, the friends are pleased, but the disdain and rudeness levelled at Maggie at their second event stun them all. Confused and sad, Maggie opts out of social affairs, and when her friends find out the truth about Maggie's treatment, it is clear that the Duke has been complicit in starting false rumours. To save her reputation Maggie and Theo marry, and for a time, all goes well. The Duke's threats towards Maggie seem empty until Lady Maggie is abducted and held prisoner in an abandoned building. The Duke rations Lady Maggie's food, imagining she will eventually offer her services in exchange for food, but Maggie has no intention of succumbing to the Dule's wishes. When her husband rescues her, Lady Maggie imagines her trials are done, but when Lord Devine doubts her truthfulness, she flees to the country. Will Lord Devine regain his trust in Lady Maggie, or has the evil Duke ruined their marriage forever?
