Jennifer is fraught after a recent pit disaster, and also believes she has been deserted by her fiancée. Julian Rothe offers to develop her talent as an opera singer and she readily accepts the idea in order to escape from this low point in her life. Later, however, she discovers the truth - her fiancée was crippled in the pit disaster and that his leaving her was really an act of self-sacrifice. She returns to the village and marries him, but then finds her new life very much at odds with the one she has abandoned in order to do so
