When Professor Timothy Ames of Stanford University falls into a catatonic state after an encounter with an entity called Ubix, Detective Jess Blair leads the investigation to catch the culprit responsible for Tim's condition. After Alicen Treves also becomes comatose, Jess realizes the truth behind Ubix is more complex and scientists from the Brane Research Center are recruited to assist. The center's chairman, Quan Jintao, launches a mission to understand the phenomenon and Jess joins with Homeland Security in an attempt to free Tim and Alicen from Ubix's clutches.
