UNGENDERED asks why does the narrator's gender matter to the story told? It shouldn't but it does. The response then is how can we, as writers, reach across the gender binary and meet our readers on our own terms? The following pages contains a mix of Leamy's ongoing search for gender ambiguous literary role models, suggestions for how to approach writing gender in fiction and non-fiction as well as a few short story examples. Using Autoethnography as a research method, Leamy uses personal experiences to understand culture, society, and the self in relation to androgynous and nonbinary literature.
