The story follows the adventures of protagonist Paul Pennyfeather as he gets expelled from Oxford (for running through the campus trouser-less) and is forced to take a job in a tiny Welsh private school. There, Pennyfeather becomes involved with the mother of one of his students, who is running a local brothel and has dreams of becoming Pennyfeather's he can stay out of jail.
