"Robinson Crusoe" is Daniel Defoe's extraordinary 1719 novel of hardship and survival and it is credited as being perhaps the first novel ever written in the English language. When the title character finds himself marooned on a desert island off the coast of Venezuela, he is forced to combat the challenges and dangers of his situation which includes finding shelter, feeding himself, coping with soul-draining loneliness, and the threat posed by the cannibal tribe that often visits the island to perform their abhorrent rituals. When one of the prisoners escapes, Crusoe and the former prisoner - who he names "Friday" - become companions and help each other to navigate the perils of the island and, ultimately, to escape their fate.
