A good example of a little known but well done "film noir," shot primarily on location in San Francisco. Brian Donlevy plays a top level but naive businessman who suddenly finds himself the target of his scheming wife and her calculating boyfriend. As an adulterous wife, Helen Walker conspires with her lover to kill her husband, but the plot backfires, killing the lover instead. With a stunning twist and the belief that it's Donlevy that's killed in the plot, he stays in hiding and does not come forward and assumes a new identity as a garage mechanic. When his wife is tried for his murder, he must decide whether or not to reveal he's still alive. Outstanding photography by Ernst Laszlo adds depth to the noir mood providing a visually compelling movie
