Hundred Proof is a collection of short stories by Scott Wolven, whose collection Controlled Burn drew comparisons to Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and Denis Johnson, with the title story selected for Best American Noir of The Century by James Ellroy. The stories in Hundred Proof give readers more of Wolven's distinct voice, exploring crime and the violence that comes with it across a hardboiled landscape. Joyce Carol Oates writes (on the story Barracuda) " expectations at virtually every turn, as willfully shapeless as cuts from scene to scene with the nervous energy of a hand-held camera. For Wolven's men-loggers, tree poachers, corrupt cops-the impulse to do terrible damage to one another is as natural as watching pit bulls tear one another to pieces for sport."
