Attorney Andy Carpenter becomes involved in a criminal investigation connected to a previous tragedy in New Jersey. Two years earlier, a gas leak caused an explosion in an office building, resulting in multiple deaths. Jeff Wheeler, who was present during the incident, entered the building to assist and rescued a dog later named Rufus, whom he adopted. Jeff believed that one of the building's owners was responsible for the explosion. When that building owner is later found murdered, Jeff is arrested and charged with the crime. Rufus is left in the care of Jeff's sister, who asks Andy Carpenter to represent Jeff. Recalling Jeff's actions during the explosion, Andy agrees to take the case and investigates the circumstances surrounding the murder and the earlier disaster
