Event Description

Between the world wars, African American artists produced an extraordinary output of painting, sculpture and photography answering a call to action from Howard University Professor Alain Locke. Diverse in style, these artists often told the story of important events in African American history, including The Great Migration. In this program, art historian Jeff Mishur will discusses artists associated with this movement, including Jacob Lawrence, Aaron Douglass, Augusta Savage, Archibald Motley, James Van Der Zee, and more. Join us to learn insightful background information on a selection of famous works from the Harlem Renaissance. The lecture is one hour with additional time for Q&A.

Jeff Mishur is co-owner of Art Excursions, who provide private guiding in Chicago, lectures, and cultural tours. A popular speaker about art historical and travel topics, Mishur has his M.A. in Art History from Northern Illinois University and has taught at the university level for many years.

This program is part of the Art 101 series.
