Event Description

Join us to celebrate Pride Month with an assortment of critically acclaimed documentary film screenings, each followed by a facilitated discussion.

Last in the Pride Month miniseries is Paris is Burning. This classic documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their "house" culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers. Groups from each house compete in elaborate balls that take cues from the world of fashion. Also touching on issues of racism and poverty, the film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey.

Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York city and the African- American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.

Facilitated discussion will follow. Register with up to 1 guest. Refreshments will be served.
