Event Description

There is a great temptation to airbrush ourselves on the page, to fill in the pockmarks of our flaws--and yet this leaves us not only less trustworthy, but less interesting. In this 2-hour memoir workshop, we will explore how the contradictions in personalities—the gaps between dirty laundry and grace—are the most interesting space. Together, we'll discuss how craft choices around persona and structure can help us harness this charge, writing into our gorgeous, complex selves.

Katherine E. Standefer, an Arlington Heights native and John Hersey H.S. graduate, is the author of Lightning Flowers: My Journey to Uncover the Cost of Saving A Life. Standefer earned her MFA in Creative Nonfiction from the University of Arizona in 2014. She is currently a professor in Ashland University's Low-Residency MFA program. Previously, she taught in a narrative medicine pilot at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine and in the undergraduate creative writing program at the University of Arizona. She has also taught nonfiction at libraries, literary centers, conferences, and universities across the country. Her writing appeared in The Best American Essays 2016.
